Compassion & Fatigue - Targeting Caregivers

June 22, 2017

“We have not been directly exposed to the trauma scene, but we hear the story told with such intensity, or we hear similar stories so often, or we have the gift and curse of extreme empathy and we suffer. We feel the feelings of our clients. We experience their fears. We dream their dreams. Eventually, we lose a certain spark of optimism, humor and hope. We tire. We aren’t sick, but we aren’t ourselves.” …C. Figley, 1995

Description: Compassion fatigue is characterized by a gradual lessening of compassion over time, resulting from a combination of burnout and secondary traumatic stress related to vicarious traumatization from repeated exposure to traumatic material. Many causes may be:

• Frequently and routinely placing the needs of others before our own needs

• Unresolved past trauma and pain

• Lack of healthy professional/personal coping skills

• Providing care to others with burnout and stress (negativity can be contagious)

• Lack of personal boundaries

• Overdeveloped sense of responsibility

The training will use a mix of lecture, small group activities and video that is designed to assist the caregiver to understand, create awareness and develop strategies to aid themselves in defining self-care.

Target Audience: This training is for professionals who provide care to older adults, such as nurses, social workers, case managers, housing service coordinators, nursing home administrators, personal care home administrators, aging and mental health workers.
